Georgia State Record Walleye Caught
NEW State Record Walleye Caught On Lake Rabun
CLAYTON, Ga. (2/22/2016)
Angler Wes Carlton knows his walleye, and is awfully glad that he took time to go fish last week! Carlton, age 42, of Gainesville hooked the new state record walleye at Lake Rabun on Feb. 19.
According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division, this 14 lb, 2 oz, 31 ½” inch catch beat the existing state record, established in 1995, by almost 3 pounds! A new state record has to be at least one ounce greater.
“Based on sampling efforts by fisheries staff, we have just been waiting on the day that a new state record walleye was pulled from Lake Rabun,” says John Biagi, chief of fisheries for the Wildlife Resources Division. ”Hearing about a new state record is a great start to 2016 and I hope it encourages all new and experienced anglers to get outdoors and go fish Georgia!”
Walleye are considered part of the perch fish family. They typically have a golden-brown colored body with a white belly. The name derives from their large, glassy marble-like eyes, and they have a spiny dorsal fin and long, sharp teeth. Up to 1-2 lb walleye are typical, but found up to 15 lb. They live in large, cold water rivers and lakes and are frequently found near boulders, points and humps. Recommended bait or lures include minnows, nightcrawlers, jigs, crankbait and spinner combos.

Brown Trout:
Most of the Brown Trout have migrated over deep water the last week or so. They are cruising up and down the main lake channels and Creek channels chasing the Blue-Back Herring around. We have been catching these fish with spoons. Casting to surfacing Trout can be really productive! Try using a 3/4 oz spoon in silver/blue. Work the spoon in a jerking roll action back towards the boat. We have also had good luck with a Pearl White 1/2oz Super Spin head tipped with a fluke jr. This under Spin works well with so many different fish on the northern lakes. We have caught Trout, Bass, Walleye, Chain Pickerel, and Yellow Perch on this lure.
Walleye
The Walleye have been feeding great the last week or so. The weather has not been he greatest for fishing for the Eye’s. This is typical this time of year. February and March are very Windy months on most north Georgia lakes. Try finding a cove or bend in the river that is a little protected from the wind. Walleye are very specific to brush and rocks for cover. They will feed away from this structure but quickly return after feeding. We have been catching fish on a 20 to 30 ft bottom. Try dropping a 1/4 oz bright jig head tipped with a medium crappie minnow and working it up and down about a foot or two off the bottom. Location Location Location is the key to catching Walleye. They are not ghosts; I seem to hear this a lot from anglers. Walleye are not aggressive feeders like Bass and other Georgia specie’s of fish. They are slow taking the bait most of the time. Knowing how to find the fish on your electronics is the key to success! The Walleye should slowly start heading up the rivers and creeks over the next few weeks to spawn. Try locating fish on their way to or from spawn. Spawning Walleye are not big on eating. Once they have finished spawning they are very hungry. This is a great time to catch a trophy!
Bass
The Spotted Bass are deep and feeding great in the afternoon’s. We have been catch Spots on Drop Shot rigs. We have also caught fish on the Super Spin tipped with a small Herring colored swim bait. These fish are a little lethargic so work the bait slower than normal. We have been working main lake points in 30 to 45ft of water. These fish will slowly start pulling up a little shallower as we head into March and the water temps rise in the afternoon’s. Look for red clay banks the water warms faster in these areas. Try working a 4in jerk bait in these areas.
Good luck!

Bass.
The bass have finally settled into a normal fall pattern with most of the fish up shallow and feeding great. We have caught some really good spots and large mouth on top water the last few trips. Try using a small top water bait ( Sammy) Strike King etc. Herring colors always work best. Crank baits will start working over the next few weeks. I like using a 5 to 7 ft diving crank bait in a yellow perch or Bream color.
Brown Trout
The adult Brown Trout are finishing up their spawn. They are congregated up in the creeks. They will soon start their pilgrimage back down the lake to the main lake channels over the next few weeks. The lake has been stocked with a lot of small Trout. These fish are aggressive and easy to catch. Any type of spinner, small crank bait or small jerk bait works well! These fish are scattered all over the lake from one end to the other.
Walleye
The Walleye have moved up on the main lake points and humps. These fish are feeding shallow the first few hours of daylight and feeding several hours throughout the night if you are able to stay out late enough to catch them. We have been casting chrome jerk baits over these fish with a slow steady roll of the Reel. They are not very aggressive and sometimes take several cast to a specific area to catch one. The Walleye we have been catching lately have been healthy (3 to 5lbs). These fish should continue to feed on this same pattern over the next few weeks. Look for rocky bottom or heavy timber near these shallow water points and humps. They like heavy cover when they are not up feeding.
Good luck!

Bass:
The top water bite has started. The fish are all up and down the lake for about 2 hrs every morning and sometimes mid day. We have been throwing Spro Top Dogs and Small Lucky Craft Sammy’s in Herring color. We boated about 24 fish on top water in one five hour trip this week. The action should get better as we head towards the high 60 deg mark over the next few weeks. These fsh will remain shallow as long as the water temps don’t dive into the 50s before the month is out.
Brown Trout
The Big Brown have started getting shallower with the cooling trend. These trout are hanging on a 20 ft bottom and are biting anything that’s looks like a Herring. Try casting a small Parker spoon and letting it fall almost to the bottom on the main lake points. Slow retrieve works best with a jerking action all the way to the boat. These fish will start to work their way to the creeks over the next few weeks to spawn. The young trout will remain over the main lake points and humps and bite any kinds of crank bait or spinner.
Walleye
The Walleye have also began their pilgrimage up the lake towards the creek mouths. These fish are feeding on a 30 ft bottom early in the morning and at night. Try using live bait ( med,lg shinners with a 1/2 oz jig) when targeting try these Walleye. Studying the fish finder is the key to catching Walleye this time of year. Look for the Walleye to get shallower and feed on top over the next few weeks all the way through winter. These fish love the cold!
Thanks
Good luck!

Lake Lanier Fishing Report
The Striped Bass Action has been great this summer. We have been fishing on some really big schools on the south end of the lake. Moat of the fish we are catching seem to be healty this year. The peak bite seem to be in the afternoon hours midday. Lake Lanier Buford Dam releases water daily although the times vary but the bite is better when the Corps of enginners are releasing water. Most of the fish we have been catching the last few days have been in the 80 to 100ft depths. Some of these Striped Bass are in 20lbs range. Thats not a big fish fornLake Lanier bit very nice for summer time.
Come join us for a Lake Lanier Guided fishing trip.

Trout
The trout bite has been slow the last week or so. We have managed to catch a few bigger fish in deep water with live Herring. These fish are holding over a 60 to 80ft bottom. We have marked some really big schools of smaller fish but to no avail. These fish will start biting with the cooler fronts that usually come in towards the beginning of October. As the water temps drop into the low 70s and high 60s we should see a top water small spoon or fluke bite. The trout population seems to be the best I have seen in years. The fall and winter bite should be unreal this year.
Bass
The bass bite has really picked up over the last few days. We have been landing some healthy Spotted Bass and Large Mouths. Most of these fish have been out over the main lake channels. We have been catching them with crank baits in the 20 to 30 ft depths. Look for the bass to pull up shallow over the next few weeks. The Spook and Sammy bite will peak as the water cools a little into the 60deg range. Most of the bait fish that the bass are chasing are very small 2in. Try casting small flukes on ultra lite gear.
Walleye
October is a great month to target a North Georgia Trophy Walleye. These fish have been deep all Summer and will be looking for those shallow water baitfish schools. Try trolling small tiger pattern Rapalas or Yo-Zuri crank baits size 5 or 7. Slow the boat speed a little 2.4 mph. Try trolling deep water ledges where there are rock outcroppings or dense brush. The Walleye are very structure oriented and always keep close to structure.
Good Luck!

Lake Lanier Fishing Report
Dog days are here. The Striped Bass action has been hot!! The water temp is still in the 80’s and the fish are still hanging on the south end of Lake Lanier. We have been catching most of our fish over a 100ft bottom. These fish are grouped up tight in big schools. The Capt. Mack Bucktail bite has turned on. Try dropping these jigs down through the Stripped Bass schools and reeling up very fast while stopping to pause briefly. Just hold on to yhe rod because when they hit its like a frieght train running on the end of your line!
