LAke Burton/ Lake Rabun Walleye & Trout Fishing

The trout bite has beeen great this month. We have had several fish in the  8 to 9lbs range early in the morning. After 9am or so we typically troll with crank baits over deep water.  The Walleye have been holding on the south lake humps great. In the mornings these fish will be in the 28 to 35 ft range. They are feeding aggresively and will eat just about anything you can get close to them.

Lake Lanier Fishing Guided Trip

July

The Striped Bass south action is ureal!!!!  The fish have been over deep water for a couple of weeks now.  Today we fish out of Port Royal Marina with a couple of collge ball coaches. We boated 15 fish in the first hour of the trip with a big fish of 23lbs. The bite slowed a little and we still managed to catch another 6 fish.  We caught 4 fish on Captain Mack Bucktail jigs tipped with live Blueback Herrin and swim baits Gambler (Big EZ white). Hammonds Fishing Center carries these.  Most of the fish came off of a 100ft bottom with the baits dropped in the 60 to 80ft range just over the top of the trees.

Today I fished with Bob Wheeler and friends.  We caught 13 Striped Bass in four hours. The fish were between 8lbs and 16lbs.  They were aggresive and strong.  All the fish came on a downline bite over a 50ft bottom.  Blueback Herrin have been working great.  The Unbrella U-Rig bite has begun also.  We also pulled lead core line for about 30 minutes and caught two fish.  The Gainesville Creek and Gainesville Marina area should be great for the next couple of weeks.

Lake Lanier Fishing Guides Wes Carlton Catches Lake Record Gar

After casting for an hour with a Long A Bomber for Striped Bass and catching an 18lber. I hooked what i thought was a huge Striped Bass and after 15minutes finally got to see a 5ft gar that was extremely large.  My initial thought was this fish would cut the line.  After several more boat side visits. The big Gar was tired.  A bass boat pulled up close during the fight and offered to assist me land the big fish. The fish was pulled into the boat buy all three off us.  Thanks goes out to fellow fisherman Keith and Chad. .  The Longnose Gar weighed 24lbs when first weighed.  After and hour drive to Hammonds Fishing Center to get the fish officially  weighed. It was determined to be 22.44lbs.  I caught the fish on a Shimano Citica reel on a St Croix mojo rod with 20lbs power pro braid and a 14lbs flurocarbon leader.   I have caught several big Gar in my fishing travels, but have never felt a fight such as this one.   What a day!!!!

*Stocked Trout Waters – Best Bets

Try Rock Creek and Black Rock lakes, Dicks, Panther, Nimblewill, Sarahs, Rock, Dicks, and Tallulah.  Boggs is still closed for tornado cleanup.

We’re starting to stock some browns, so switch from your rainbow tactics.  Try some worms or spinners and aim for slower water with overhead cover.

* Wild Trout

Fishing buddy “Sautee” reported a great 2-hour trip to the upper reaches (UNNAMED STREAM) of the Hooch watershed last Saturday evening.  Small wild rainbows inhaled his cahill.

Lake Lanier Striper Fishing

Lake Lanier Fishing Guides Wes Carlton fished out of bait today.  We had three clients from Roswell today.  The Striped Bass started biting at 8am and never stopped!  I had to go and buy more bait half way during the trip today.  The fish were upper lake Gainesville Marina area.  Down lined Bluebacks seemed to work best today. Most of the fish we caught today were in the 17ft to 30ft range.  We used a short 4ft leader, and 1 1/4oz weight.  These fish were aggressive and strong!

Lake Burton/Rabun Fishing Report
Spots :The spawn is almost over with a few females hagging around the beds.  The
fish that have pulled off the beds are biting topwater (Vixen, Sammys). We had
several fish in the 6lbs range last week and a lot of 3 to 4lbers. These fish
should be biting anything in the next week or two with the postspawn bite in
full swing.

Largemouth:  The largemouth are finishing up with spawing as well.  We have
had good luck with a white trick worm in the shallows and buzz baits (white).
These fish are hungry and aggresive.  Don’t be affraid to work the baits a
little faster than normal.
Trout: The trout are biting on top early in the morning (spoons, Gold Hopkins
3/16oz).  After about 9am or so try trolling with downriggers or dipsy divers
between 10ft to 20ft deep about 20 to 40ft behind the boat with small crank
baits ( Hammonds  YoZuri Harcore). We have had a couple of 20 fish days.
Walleye: The post spawn bite is still on good. Night Crawlers trolled 80ft
behind the boat at about 3/4 mph.  Trolling Medium Crappie minnows as well as
Lucky Craft Pointers has been producing the larger fish. We had 2- 7lbs fish
this last week.
Hybrid:  The Hybrid Bass are few and far between, but when you catch one it’s
going to be a monster!  Last week we broke the Lake Burton Record Hybrid with a
12.2lbs fish.  We also caught the unofficial Lake Rabun Record Hybrid with a
10.14lbs.

Lake Lanier;  The night bite has been great this year with some really big fish
being caught on Long A Bombers, Mc-Sticks SPRO,and Yo-Zuri jerk baits.  Blue
